Total Cost $150.00 for brushes, paint, stain, sanding paper, and polyurethane:

Remove the Carpet and Tacks
Sanded (we sanded a lot, until the top of the step (Tread) was smooth to the touch). I recommend getting the sanding done as soon as you can, it creates a lot of dust!

After sanding,  I put three coats of the mahogany stain on the (Tread), I put three coats because I wanted mine as dark as I could get it.

I then painted the risers, the walls (yes the walls), the rails, and the spindles with high gloss antique white color, do this after you stain!  The high gloss cleans off easily and being that the walls are white and I have kids, this was the best choice for me.

****The stain will not go over any spilled paint, that is why I recommend staining the stairs first, the paint covers up any mistake caused by the stain.  Then I put a coat of polyurethane on each step to protect the stain and to give it a high gloss shine.

***Wipe away any paint that falls on the stained stairs immediately.
